Fresh Gallery Ōtara Call for project 2020

Fresh Gallery Ōtara is a unique destination gallery in Tāmaki Makaurau that engages and inspires people with Pacific arts and culture and reflects the diverse communities, cultures and people of Ōtara.

Situated in Ōtara Town Centre, Fresh Gallery Ōtara embraces traditional and contemporary practices and provides an opportunity for emerging and established artists to connect with local communities through exhibitions, public programmes and events.

We are calling for creative projects from groups, collectives or individuals interested in exhibiting and/or creating unique programmes at Fresh Gallery Ōtara to be held during the first half of the year 2020 (1 January – 30 June).

The annual programme at Fresh Gallery Ōtara aligns with various events through the year including Matariki Festival (2020 dates are yet to be announced). If your project recognises this season or any other significant date, please indicate that fact in your proposal.

Project criteria

  1. Preference is given to artists from the Ōtara-Papatoetoe local board area and the wider Auckland region.
  2. Your project should be relevant to the Ōtara-Papatoetoe local board community, context or location.
  3. Your project should meet one or more of the following objectives in the Fresh Gallery Ōtara Business Plan 2016-2019:

To position Fresh Gallery Ōtara as a unique destination for Pacific arts in Auckland, that attracts local, national and international artists and audiences

To deliver a balanced range of arts and cultural experiences, including contemporary and heritage works

To increase access for the local community to participate in arts and cultural experiences and creative activities

To support and mentor emerging and established local artists in the development of their professional practice and connect them to broader audiences and opportunities

To develop strong community and creative sector partnerships, and contribute to Ōtara’s identity as a creative precinct alongside Ōtara Music Arts Centre and Manukau Institute of Technology

In addition priority will be given to:

  • Group projects and/or projects with well-developed, unique programmes and events
  • Projects that recognise and celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year

Closing dates and notification of outcome

The call for proposals closes at 5pm on Sunday 24 February 2019. The outcome of proposals will be notified by Tuesday 12 March 2019. If your proposal is successful you will be invited to an initial meeting to discuss project scope, installation details, project dates and marketing. The overall budget, accompanying public programme and associated resources required will also be discussed at this time.
